The setting is 1970s Haiti, during a time when the island was a destination for sexual tourists despite its being a country under a terrorist dictatorship. The story focuses on life inside a particular rustic resort where three North American women "of a certain age"—Wellesley professor Ellen, Savannah divorcee Brenda, and factory manager Sue—seek the love and attention they're ostensibly lacking back home. Two vie for the attentions of young Legba, and the power-sex hierarchy is an effective metaphor for exploring the problematic relationship between rich countries and poor ones. "A beautifully written, seamlessly directed film with award-worthy performances by Ms. Rampling and Ms. Young." (NY Times) More at www.shadowdistribution.com
